Author Bio

Caryn Larrinaga is a Basque-American mystery, horror, and urban fantasy writer living in Utah with her husband and cats. Her debut novel Donn’s Hill (March 2017, Immortal Works Press) is a 2017 Dragon Award finalist, and her new urban fantasy Superhero Syndrome (September 2017, Twisted Tree Press) is already receiving rave reviews from readers and critics alike.

Watching scary movies through split fingers terrified Caryn as a child, and those nightmares inspire her to write now. She lives in a 90-year-old house with a colorful history, and the creaking walls and narrow hallways send her running (never walking) up the stairs from her basement. Exploring her fears through writing makes Caryn feel a little less foolish for wanting a buddy to accompany her into the tool shed.

When her fingers aren't glued to her laptop keyboard, Caryn also enjoys binge-watching Netflix with her husband, reading, playing video games, and filling up her phone's flash memory with pictures of her cats. She loves music and plays the bass guitar.

Caryn is an active member of the League of Utah Writers and the Utah Chapter of the Horror Writers Association

Press Release for Superhero Syndrome Event

For immediate release:

Utah author celebrates release of new novel with super-powered spectacle

Caryn Larrinaga, local author and 2017 Dragon Award finalistis following up her popular debut novel Donn’s Hill with a super-powered saga about finding the courage to protect the people we love. Larrinaga is celebrating the release of her new book Superhero Syndrome at the Viridian Events Center in West Jordan, Utah on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 7:00 PM. The event is open to the public with free admission, and will include family-friendly activities such as a superhero costume contest, prize drawings, and a reading and Q&A session with the author.

The costume contest, which will be judged by local podcasters from Dungeon Crawlers Radio, features prizes including a Kindle Fire tablet and Amazon gift cards. Cosplay fans who want to take their superhero-themed costumes for a test drive before Salt Lake Comic Con shouldn’t miss this chance to show off their handiwork at a smaller venue.

Larrinaga became obsessed with the notion of superpowers at a young age, thanks to Saturday morning cartoons and films like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. While bedridden with a frustratingly difficult to diagnose lung condition (later determined to be chronic bronchitis), Larrinaga fantasized that her aching chest was simply the symptom of budding superpowers, such as being able to breath underwater or belch fire. She wondered how her priorities would change if she had such extraordinary abilities. Writing Superhero Syndrome allowed her to explore that question, as well as how our relationships with the people around us would be affected by such changes.

Superhero Syndrome is "thoroughly engaging... intelligent, insightful, and charming... A superhero saga featuring an appealing heroine with a frankly cool power.” - Kirkus Reviews
